Ana Isabel Freitas

I am a Portuguese artist based in Paris since 2015. My work moves between painting, textile, and documentary cinema, exploring memory, transmission, territory, and identity. Through stitching, embroidery, and material interventions, I investigate how personal and collective stories take form—how they are inscribed into matter and passed across generations.

I studied Painting at FBAUP (Porto) and Cinema at ESTC (Lisbon), and I am currently pursuing a PhD in research-creation at the University of Paris Nanterre. My work has been exhibited, awarded, and screened in France, Portugal, and internationally.

Art

I work across painting, drawing, textile, installation, and performance to reflect on presence, gesture, and landscape as carriers of memory. Through stitching, layering, and surface work, I trace the movements of personal and collective stories across time.

Writing & Research

I work through practice-based research—where artistic inquiry, writing, and collaboration trace the paths of my work, from reflection to creation.
